Sakura, D'Starlights, Malay Bands & New World

Singapore had three amusement parks in the 60s, Happy World, New World and Great World.
I remember the El Amigo NiteClub in New World at Kitchener Road off Serangoon Road featured a group called D' Starlights from the Philippines.
They were professionals indeed and was a larger group when they added keyboard and saxaphone to the usual Shadows setup.
The New World was also known for its cabarets where the man in the street could dance with hostesses for a small fee, only fifty cents per dance.
Some others would also patronise the Bunga Tanjong dance floor where Malay bands play ronggeng music, cha-cha, rhumba, etc.
Sakura Teng, featured in earlier blogs, started her career at New World when she was 17.
