SONGS I LOVE:Why discuss a song that didn't come from the 60s? The Rainbow Connection actually came earlier and was recorded by The Carpenters in 1975 (still within our range of discussion) but they never released it.
The lyrics was by Paul Williams, a 60s songwriter, composer and actor who wrote many top hits in the early 70s that included, Just An Old Fashioned Love Song, We've Only Just Begun, Rainy Days And Mondays, Evergreen (Oscar - 1976) and songs for Three Dog Night. Kenneth Ascher, who worked with Barbra Striesland, Yoko Ono and John Lennon, composed the music,
The Rainbow Connection has been covered by more than a dozen top artistes including Willie Nelson and Kenny Loggins, both 60s musicians. It is included in the American Film Institute list of the 100 best songs of all time.
In Singapore, it is popular with adults but the young ones seem to love the lazy feel and ease of the song. The lyrics could be a challenge and interpretation varies; that it reminds readers of the Iliad, the Odyssey to Ulysses and personal discoveries. But like the lyrics suggested, could these connections be visions, illusions, magic? For lovers and dreamers? What is the rainbow connection? I am not sure but it is a lovely song though.
