Ninja Assassin

Thursday, December 24, 2009

Last night I braved the cold of the New York winter, the snow and ice, the bone chilling winds to make my way to the Cinema to watch Ninja Assassin. The trek in the inhospitable weather was certainly worth it as the action in the movie certainly warmed up my chilled blood! If you are into almost non-stop action, fast pace martial arts, weapon wielding and blood splattering with dismembered limbs, then this is the movie for you!

The movie spits action from the very beginning, there was almost no slowing down in this movie. Even the flashbacks that develop the story light was somewhat intriguing as it set the pace and the storyline for the movie. The movie stars, Korean entertainer/actor Rain (Jeong Ji-hoon) who plays Raizo, who is a Ninja Assassin who was trained from childhood by a secret Ninja clan and is being pursued by his clan for turning his back on them. The movie co-stars Naomie Harris, an English actress of Jamaican descent, who plays Mika an Europol investigator who becomes marked for death due to her investigations into the secret assassin organization. But I will say no more, you need to watch the movie.

Overall the movie was decent, the action was almost none-stop fast paced fighting and slicing. I recommend this one for the action and weapon based martial arts fans out there! I give it a Stunner Rating of 4 out of 5 as I basically got what I went there to see! Now I need to go give Avatar a watch to see how good it is and what the hype is all about.

Final Destination?

Monday, September 7, 2009

For all those who watched any of the Final Destination sequels you will know why I find a story I recently read in The Gleaner website bit of news all so strange! For those who didn't watch the original or the very predictable sequels, here is the gist of the movies. A group of people consisting of friends and complete strangers miss a horrific death due to the premonition of one of the members. However shortly after "death" comes for each and every one of them one by one no matter how hard they try to avoid it.

Hey speaking of Final Destination, I watched Final Destination IV 3D, I know it was crap, but I just wanted to see the 3D effects. I won't even give a review of that movie. All I'll say the very first Final Destination was absolutely great and they should have just stopped there.

Alas I digressed. Well now that you get the gist of what I am talking about, you will understand why I found this story in The Gleaner very surprising!

Twice unlucky - Cyclist dies after being hit by motor cars

Published: Monday | August 31, 2009

A pedal cyclist died at the Falmouth Hospital from injuries he sustained after being hit by two motor cars along the Falmouth main road in Trelawny on Saturday.

He has been identified as 52-year-old George Sinclair of Hague in the parish.

Reports from the Constabulary Communication Network are that about 7:35 p.m, Sinclair was riding his bicycle along the Falmouth main road in the vicinity of Rock Bridge when he was hit by a Toyota Camry motor car travelling in the opposite direction. The driver of the car exited the vehicle and was assisting the injured man out of the road when he was hit by a second Toyota Camry motor car that was heading towards Falmouth. Sinclair was taken to the Falmouth Hospital where he died while being treated.

Weird isn't it? Can you imagine being hit at the same spot, twice in almost the same instant in time and by the same make and model car! That's some real life Final Destination stuff there!

Orphan, The Ugly Truth

Friday, August 14, 2009

Hi there my readers... well that is if I still have readers, since I haven't posted or visited much blogs lately. Things haven't been all that hectic, but it seems the time just goes by so quickly without me even knowing what I did or when the time went by. One of the few things I have been doing is watching a couple of movies at the cinema and of course I have to give you a run down of the two I watched so far.

The fist was The Ugly Truth, a battle of the sexes romance comedy staring Katherine Heigl who plays Abby Richter, a small network TV producer at the top of her game but not the same in her love life and Gerard Butler who plays Mike Butler who runs a off the wall programme about relationships on a late night cable station. Their worlds collide when they are pitched together to host a programme on Abby's network in a desperate bid to increase ratings. Mike takes on the challenge of helping Abby get her love life on track which leads to quite a few funny moments. The Ugly Truth, although predictable, was a decent romance comedy which is sure to give you a few laughs and won't let you feel bad about going to the Cinema. I give it a Stunner Rating of 3 out of 5.

Last night it was off to the cinema again, but this time it was to watch Orphan. Now this movie was pretty decent, the story line, the suspense and the ensuing terror was just enough to make it a movie worth watching. It started off slow, but I guess that slow start was needed to build up the story and the scenes to follow. The movie is about a couple, John and Kate (Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga)... no not the same ones from John & Kate Plus 8, these had only two children. However, they have been suffering from the loss of their third child who was a stillborn which has left Kate very fragile since the ordeal and it has been putting a strain on their marriage. In ad effort to move on with her life, save her marriage and appease her young daughter who wants a sister, Kate decides to adopt a daughter from the local orphanage. They find themselves drawn to a very articulate orphan named Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), who they decide to adopt. However, they certainly were not prepared for what Esther had to offer and the life threatening trouble that was to follow, because there's definitely something wrong with Esther. If you want to go watch a movie with great suspense mixed with terror and a decent plot, then this is definitely the movie to go watch. I recommend this movie for the cinema money! I give it a Stunner Rating of 4 out of 5!

I guess there are a few movies still out there worth going to the cinema to watch.

Revenge of the Fallen

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

I have been anticipating Transformers Revenge of the Fallen for some time now. However I had delayed going to the movies to watch it as I kept hearing horror stories of the cinema being filled to capacity, especially for this movie. My first attempt at watching this movie was last week Monday at the two for one late movie special. However, this was a total failure as we arrived at the cinema late, about 8:10pm, which is in fact late for a two for one special day and as such the movie was sold out and also parking was non-existent. So I had to make a return to Carib 5 on Friday, to watch the movie, and even this was almost a total failure as the only available seats when I arrived was the box seats. After escaping the heat of my apartment, to watch this movie, I was not prepared to return to the heat again so quickly and opted to pay the extra for the box seats.

The movie started off on a funny note with the very funny conversations and behaviour of Sam and his comedic family members. However, the comedy was soon joined by action, action and more action. If you wanted to watch a movie that had a lot of metallic, robotic action mixed with merciless bullets firing from big guns, then this was the movie! I will agree with the critiques that said the story line was a bit weak, but the action throughout the movie made up for the not so strong story. As I said before, if you, like me, went to this movie with action on your mind, then you would enjoy this action packed movie mixed with the spices of comedy.

I did have a small feeling of wanting something more at the end of the movie, a little more fighting and metal crunching between Optimus Prime and Megatron and especially when Optimus fought with The Fallen. That would have made the movie a full dose of action for me. Nevertheless, when you see a Jamaican crowd clap at the end of a movie when it has been showing for over two weeks now, you know it is good! So to me it was a good movie overall, and definitely one that can be watched at the cinema, especially if Transformers was your cartoon of choice is your youthful days. I will give it a Stunner Rating of 4 out of 5.

Last week I went to watch The Taking of Pelhan 123. From the preview it looked like an OK movie, something one could watch at the theater, and of course it had Denzel Washington, so hit has to be a decent movie. An actor of the caliber of Denzel is at the least a guarantee that the movie would be decent, right?

The movie actually turned out better than I thought and kept me entertained from the begining to the end. The movie had a nice mixture of action, a decent and a lot of humour, despite the seriousness of the situation. Both John Travolta and Denzel Washington delivered a good performance and played their characters well. Washington played the role of Walter Garber, a NYC subway dispatcher which was recently demoted do to allegations of corruption. Travolta assumed the character of Ryder, a bad ass, wise cracking, train hijacker with a mission and some serious personality issues. The movie also had a good cast of supporting actors which included James Galdolfini of the Sopranos. The only issue I have with the movie is how it ended, it left me a bit disappointed as I was looking for something more that what it delivered. Of course I won't tell you much about the movie, you need to go watch it!

Overall, The Taking of Pelhan 123 was a great movie, and I would recommend it, I give it a Stunner rating of 4 out of 5.
